Young Swimmers, Big Achievements: Unveiling the Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming
Presented by Spectrum Aquatics (https://spectrumproducts.com/), a SwimSwam partner, this series shines a spotlight on the incredible talents emerging from age group swimming across the nation.
Sara Young, 13, Rockville Montgomery Swim Club (PV): A Pre-Birthday Splash of Glory
Just before turning 13 in December, Sara Young made waves at the Riley Eaton Holiday Invitational in Boyds, Maryland. She shattered five personal bests, securing top 25 rankings in the girls’ 11-12 age group for three events. Her 200-yard freestyle time of 1:51.41 catapulted her to 11th all-time, while her 100-yard butterfly (56.06) and 100-yard freestyle (51.78) earned her 18th and 22nd spots, respectively. Young’s dominance extended to the 50-yard freestyle, where she cracked the top 100 all-time with a 24.18, and the 200-yard IM (2:09.55). But here's where it gets controversial: Can a swimmer’s pre-birthday performance truly predict future success, or is it just a fleeting moment of brilliance? What do you think?
Kate Allen, 13, Carmel Swim Club (IN): A Weekend of Unstoppable Wins
Representing the Indiana Zone Team at the Mid States All-Star Championships in Indianapolis, Kate Allen was a force to be reckoned with. She claimed three individual victories, two runner-up finishes, and contributed to two winning relays. Her 200-yard IM time of 2:00.24 ranked her 1st among 13-year-old girls this season, while her 200-yard freestyle (1:49.47) and 500-yard freestyle (4:53.37) secured 2nd place. Allen’s 50-yard freestyle (23.56) placed her 3rd. And this is the part most people miss: Her relay splits—23.09 in the 200 free relay and 25.74 in the 200 medley relay—were pivotal in her team’s victories. How crucial do you think relay performances are in shaping a swimmer’s overall success?
Gerhardt Hoover, 17, Commonwealth Swimming (NE): A Pre-Christmas Explosion of Speed
At the New England Swimming Senior Championships in Andover, Gerhardt Hoover delivered six personal bests, with standout performances in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM. He shaved over a second off his 200 back time, clocking 1:43.84 to rank 6th among 17-year-old boys this season. His 200 IM time of 1:46.19 placed him 9th. Hoover also set bests in the 200 free (1:39.72), 50 back (22.84), and 100 back (48.55). Bold question: Is Hoover’s late-season surge a sign of untapped potential, or is he peaking too early? Share your thoughts below!
Sarah Chiang, 11, Pacific Dragons Swim Team (PN): A Versatile Rising Star
At the Pacific Northwest 14 & Under Short Course Championships, Sarah Chiang showcased her versatility with best times in six events. Her 1650-yard freestyle time of 18:38.64, a 36-second improvement, ranked her 4th among 11-year-old girls. Chiang also excelled in the 500 free (5:30.36) and 400 IM (4:49.61), placing 21st and 6th, respectively. Just a week later, she added more bests in the 200 back (2:20.68), 50 fly (30.55), and 200 fly (2:28.68). Controversial interpretation: Could Chiang’s rapid improvements across multiple strokes indicate a future specialist or a jack-of-all-trades? What’s your take?
Jacob Lee, 12, Rose Bowl Aquatics (CA): Breaststroke Brilliance and Beyond
At the SCAT Winter Age Group Invitational in San Clemente, Jacob Lee set four personal bests, highlighted by his 100-yard breaststroke time of 1:02.01, ranking him 37th all-time in the boys’ 11-12 age group. He also excelled in the 50 free (24.36), 100 free (55.32), and 100 IM (1:01.16). At the Pacific Coast All-Stars meet, Lee won the 50-yard breaststroke in 28.49, just shy of his personal best. Thought-provoking question: Is Lee’s focus on breaststroke the right strategy, or should he diversify his event portfolio? Let us know in the comments!
