A popular brand of peanut butter has been pulled from shelves across several provinces due to the alarming presence of unsafe levels of a dangerous toxin. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) announced that specific ButtaNutt peanut butter spreads were recalled after laboratory tests revealed higher-than-permissible concentrations of aflatoxin. This finding triggered an immediate removal of the products from retail locations.
The manufacturer officially notified the commission about the recall on a recent Monday. The affected batches were produced on January 15, 2026, and were distributed to consumers in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape through various stores.

The NCC highlighted that these particular peanut butter products did not meet the stringent quality standards outlined in Regulation R.1145 of the Department of Health. This regulation specifically governs the tolerance levels for toxins produced by fungi in food items.
"Aflatoxin can lead to significant health issues, including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain," the commission stated. Aflatoxins are potent toxic compounds generated by certain types of fungi. They are frequently found in staple crops like maize, peanuts, and tree nuts, especially when grown in warm and humid environments. Prolonged exposure to these toxins has been scientifically linked to liver damage and an increased risk of cancer.
This is the part that might make you double-check your pantry... Consumers are strongly advised to stop consuming these affected peanut butter products immediately. They are encouraged to return any purchased items to the retailer for a full refund.
Hardin Ratshisusu, the acting commissioner for the NCC, mentioned that the commission is actively collaborating with the supplier to thoroughly investigate the extent of the contamination. "This includes determining if the source of the problem can be traced back to the supplier of the raw nuts," Ratshisusu explained. The commission is ensuring that this recall process is conducted in full compliance with the Consumer Protection Act.
But here's where it gets controversial... While this peanut butter recall is concerning, it's not an isolated incident. The NCC has previously issued warnings about other consumer products. For instance, in November of the previous year, the commission recalled two Belkin power banks due to a potential fire risk. The specific models involved were the BelkinBoost Charge USB-C power banks 20k (model numbers BPB 002 and BP 0003), and the Auto Tracking Stands Pro (model number MMA 008). The NCC indicated that these devices might have a manufacturing defect that could cause their lithium-ion batteries to overheat.
