UK Braces for Winter Weather: Met Office Issues Yellow Warning for Snow and Rain
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and rain across the UK, with experts urging residents to prepare for potential disruptions. The alert covers the east of England, where up to 4cm of snow is expected in certain areas.
The warning comes after heavy rain battered the UK on Sunday morning, which is now predicted to turn into sleet and snow. Forecasters anticipate the heaviest snowfall in the Lincolnshire Wolds and parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, but the snow is expected to transition back to rain later in the day.
This is not the first warning of the weekend; several have expired, but a new snow warning is in effect until 4 pm on Sunday, covering parts of eastern England. The Environment Agency has also urged vigilance due to ongoing flood risks.
As of Sunday morning, there were 74 flood warnings and 162 flood alerts across England. The Environment Agency's update warned of potential groundwater impacts in southern England for the next five days, as well as river flooding risks in Somerset, Wiltshire, and parts of the Midlands from Sunday to Tuesday.
The Met Office predicts rain clearing eastern areas in the evening, but heavy showers will persist through the night. Some snow is possible over the highest hills in the north. Monday brings sunny spells and showers, with a risk of hail and thunder in some areas, and snow showers in the far north.
From Tuesday to Thursday, the weather is expected to be drier with sunny spells, but there's an increasing risk of rain and potential hill snow in the south, especially on Wednesday and Thursday. Frosty nights are also anticipated during this period.
