Get ready to be amazed as the legendary Triennale Milano art museum undergoes an exciting expansion! Nestled within the serene Parco Sempione gardens, this revered institution has been a cornerstone of Milan's contemporary art scene since its inception in the 1920s. Now, after a meticulous restoration journey, it's back in the spotlight with three brand-new venues that pay homage to its rich history while embracing the future.
First up is Cucina, an all-day café and restaurant that seamlessly blends into the museum's original architecture. Designed by Luca Cipelletti, the architectural director of the Palazzo, Cucina boasts a simple yet elegant interior that showcases the stunning 1930s coffered ceiling. The space is illuminated by a subtle lighting system from ERCO, drawing attention to the bold ceiling beams. Emerald-green curtains add a touch of sophistication, echoing the Cipollino marble surfaces, while the mint-green dining tables are inspired by a 1933 design by Gigiotto Zanin. Abstract artworks by Milanese artist Alberto Garutti complement the clean lines of the architecture.
But here's where it gets interesting: Cipelletti has reinstated a series of boiserie niches from Muzio's original plan, giving them a modern twist. "They've been reinterpreted with a functional, contemporary key," he explains. The use of batten oak panels lightens the appearance and provides an acoustic function, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Diners at Cucina, with its expansive outdoor terrace, will enjoy enhanced views of the Palazzo's triple portico and the newly illuminated Bagni Misteriosi fountain by Giorgio de Chirico. "Cucina offers a sense of escape from the hustle and bustle while immersing visitors in the dynamic cultural setting of Triennale," says Carla Morogallo, the museum's director general.
Next, we have Voce, an experimental music and sound space that feels almost futuristic. Voce hosts a range of musical events, from concerts and DJ sets to listening sessions and sound installations. It also features a late-night cocktail bar, operating from 6 pm to 2 am. Conceived to explore electronic and digital music, Voce pays homage to the Triennale's historical inclusion of music within its remit, hosting legendary concerts like Jimi Hendrix's in 1968.
The design of Voce is inspired by Muzio's concept, with a rectangular framework supported by pillars that create three cathedral-like "naves." The focal point is a soundwall with a cutting-edge speaker system designed by Giorgio Di Salvo, Lucio Visentini, and Knauf. The interior features a digital lighting system by Anonima Luci, modular felt seating by Philippe Malouin and Meritalia, and a custom neon sign by Marcello Maloberti at the entrance.
"Voce aims to give music the status of a work of art," says Stefano Boeri, president of Triennale Milano. "We want to create a collection of musical works that can only be experienced in this unique space, much like a Renaissance painting or Baroque sculpture in an art museum."
Last but not least, we have Gioco, a design-led children's facility conceived by Cipelletti. The space is transformed by lightweight, modular cork and pine blocks designed by French studio Smarin. These versatile blocks can be arranged to create desks, seats, play structures, and partitions, allowing the space to adapt to various activities, from playrooms to screening venues and dance studios.
"Gioco offers a unique and innovative approach to children's education," says Cipelletti. "Visitors can expect interactive workshops and educational experiences inspired by the museum's exhibitions."
With these three new venues, Triennale Milano continues its legacy as a cultural hub, offering a diverse range of experiences that cater to art enthusiasts, music lovers, and families alike. It's an exciting development that showcases the museum's commitment to innovation and its role as a vibrant cultural destination in Milan.
