Then he stepped into Formula 1 alongside Lewis Hamilton, arguably the most famous figure in global motorsport, if not one of the biggest athletes of our time.”
Wolff went on to describe Russell’s transformation both behind the wheel and as a person. “George has developed massively — in his driving skill and as a character,” he continued. “Right now, he’s absolutely among the top drivers and is playing a key role in leading our team into the next chapter.”
And the numbers back Wolff up. This season, Russell has delivered his strongest performance yet — two race victories, nine podium finishes, and a standout drive in Las Vegas just last weekend. Sitting fourth in the championship standings, he’s the best of the rest behind the title-chasing trio: Max Verstappen and the McLaren duo.
Rumors had circulated for months that Verstappen might make a blockbuster switch to Mercedes, potentially shaking up the lineup. But those whispers were silenced when the reigning four-time world champion confirmed he was staying with Red Bull. Mercedes then announced its 2026 driver team in mid-October, solidifying Russell’s place — and, interestingly, rewarding him with a major pay rise as part of his new contract.
This development says a lot about how Wolff views Russell’s future. From being labeled a promising young talent to now being entrusted with Mercedes’ long-term success, Russell’s journey mirrors Wolff’s faith in him.
