A bold reality check: Stephen Colbert tore into White House chief of staff Susie Wiles on Tuesday, spotlighting how closely her work ties to President Donald Trump’s online presence. This came as Vanity Fair published the second of two bombshell pieces about Trump’s inner circle, noting that Wiles uses a “freestanding video monitor” near a fireplace in her West Wing corner office to display Trump’s Truth Social posts in real time.
Colbert couldn’t resist the moment to joke about the unusual setup. “So, there’s fire and a constant stream of Trump’s social media posts? Are you sure that’s your office, because it sounds like Hell to me!” he quipped, drawing laughs from the studio.
He also reminded viewers of Trump’s firing of the Justice Department in what he described as an unprecedented move over the past year. Yet Wiles told Vanity Fair in an August interview that she didn’t think the president was on a “retribution tour.”
Responding to that, Colbert took a stance of his own: “Okay, I’ll say it for you: Donald Trump, I blame you,” he declared to the camera, prompting a large cheer from the audience.
For those interested in Colbert’s full Tuesday monologue, more is available from The Late Show.
