Feeling the weight of the trail? Sometimes, even the most dedicated hikers need a break. Day 113 on the PCT SOBO journey brought a much-needed 'zero day' – a day of rest and exploration – in Lancaster, CA. After conquering the desert section, a sense of accomplishment and the freedom to unwind washed over our hiker. This is a story of rest, cultural immersion, and a little bit of unexpected fun.
With zero miles hiked, the day was all about recharging. Our hiker, along with their parents, decided to explore the local area. A quick sushi lunch set the stage for an afternoon of discovery. A simple search on Google Maps led them to the Antelope Valley Indian Museum, a choice that proved to be a delightful surprise.
Upon arrival, the museum was bustling with activity. It turned out to be a weekend fundraiser hosted by an Indian organization. The scene was vibrant, with dancers from various tribes showcasing their traditions and selling delicious food. This unexpected cultural immersion was a highlight of the day!
The dancers' colorful attire and the invitation to join in the festivities created a lively atmosphere. While the hiker's knees were too sore for dancing, the tempting fry bread was a must-try. Seeking respite from the heat, they explored the museum itself. The museum, initially founded by a collector of Indian artifacts (some acquired through methods now considered questionable), is now managed by CA State Parks. The Parks have worked to ensure historical accuracy and respect. The artistry and creativity on display were truly impressive.
As the day drew to a close, they returned to their hotel, tired but content. The next day, the parents were to depart, so they cherished the remaining time together. It was a perfect blend of relaxation, cultural experience, and family time.
And that's a glimpse into the life of a PCT SOBO hiker!
