Katelyn Budgell, who serves as the managing director of Cruise NL, characterizes the previous year as an "immense" period for the maritime travel industry.
In her words, the province experienced its most extended cruise season ever, largely due to the Port of Corner Brook welcoming the first-ever winter cruise to the region. The season spanned from January 16 to October 22, 2025, shattering previous records with an impressive tally of 180 cruise ship arrivals across 24 different ports.
So, what’s fueling this surge in interest from cruise lines? According to Budgell, Newfoundland and Labrador presents an experience that is unlike any other in the cruise industry. The province boasts a distinctive culture and breathtaking coastlines that attract visitors. Furthermore, she points out that many cruise itineraries focus exclusively on Viking settlements, a unique selling point that Newfoundland and Labrador can proudly offer.
Adding to the province's allure is its strategic geographic position. Budgell notes that it serves as a vital hub for ships departing from major locations such as New York, Boston, Greenland, Iceland, and even the Mediterranean, enhancing its appeal as a cruise destination.
