Illini's Matthew Bailey: A Defensive Star's Return
The Illinois Illini's star defensive back, Matthew Bailey, is returning for his senior season, the program announced on Monday. Bailey, a two-year starting safety, had been considering a jump to the NFL, but decided to stay and lead the team once more.
Bailey's impressive performance in the 2024 season earned him All-Big Ten honorable mention. He started in all 12 regular-season games, leading the team with 76 tackles, 4.0 TFLs, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and two pass breakups. His single-season career high of 59 solo tackles ranked 23rd in the Big Ten in tackles per game (6.33).
However, Bailey missed most of the 2023 season due to a shoulder injury. Despite this, he has started 25 games in the last two seasons, accumulating 170 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, and one interception. Bailey's leadership and vocal presence in the secondary make him a valuable asset to the team, and he is expected to emerge as a team captain for the 2026 season.
The retention of Bailey is a significant boost for the Illinois secondary. As a three-year starter and one of the best defensive backs on the team, he will anchor the boundary safety spot and guide the new free safety and potentially STAR defender. Bailey's presence will help elevate the program's reputation and his draft stock. This decision also explains why rising senior Saboor Karriem entered the transfer portal this week.
Head coach Bret Bielema expressed his excitement about Bailey's future, stating, "Matt's a very talented player. We discussed his potential NFL prospects before the season began, and I mentioned that a decision might be necessary at the end of the year. The NFL allows us to evaluate five players at a higher level, and Matt was one of those selected. Once the season concluded, we had to submit a form, which takes about two to three weeks to process. It's a waiting game, but I'm thrilled about his future."
Bailey's decision to return is a testament to his dedication to the team and his desire to lead. His academic, community, and leadership contributions, along with his on-field performance, make him an invaluable asset to the Illinois Illini.
