Get ready for a thrilling revelation! Jon Watts, the mastermind behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man trilogy, has a secret horror project that might just blow your mind. But here's where it gets controversial...
Watts' directorial debut, the 2014 horror film Clown, was more than just a one-off project. In a recent interview, he dropped a bombshell, revealing that he and his friend Christopher Ford had grand plans for the franchise. They envisioned not just one, but a whopping seven sequels!
Clown, a supernatural horror, tells the tale of a loving dad who discovers a sinister clown suit, turning its wearer into a killer. It's a psychological thriller with a twist, and Watts admits he wishes he had leaned more into the horror elements. He envisions a series akin to Evil Dead 2, taking the story to even crazier places.
"I see so much potential in the premise," Watts shared. "There are facets to the story we're still eager to explore. It's an evergreen concept where anyone can put on the suit."
But here's the part most people miss... Watts acknowledges the cultural shift surrounding clowns post-John Wayne Gacy. He believes it's the mask and the disturbing smile that creeps people out, yet he still appreciates the good, positive clowns who bring joy.
"I feel a little guilty for contributing to the fear of clowns," he confesses. "I know some amazing clowns, and I don't want everyone to think they're all scary."
Watts' vision for the Clown franchise is a delicate balance, exploring the dark and the light. He has a detailed outline for all seven films, treating it as a fun prank that might one day become a reality.
After Clown, Watts directed the thriller Cop Car and then embarked on his Spider-Man journey. He even dabbled in The Fantastic Four before stepping back from the superhero world to make Wolfs, an action comedy. His work extends to television with The Old Man and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Recently, he returned to horror by producing Final Destination: Bloodlines and is set to produce the next installment in that franchise.
