This vision was precisely what Team USA General Manager Michael Hill and Manager Mark DeRosa presented to Skubal. Their pitch was simple: to honor him with the opportunity to represent the USA in the World Baseball Classic. And it worked!
The recruitment process spanned months, with subtle yet persistent efforts. Hill emphasized the honor of wearing the red, white, and blue, a chance few players get. He aimed to convince America's best to join the special tournament and help the team achieve victory.
But here's where it gets controversial: Unlike some rising stars who represented their countries at a young age, Skubal didn't have that experience. He received only one college offer, from Seattle University, and a spot on a national team seemed out of reach.
DeRosa's initial contact with Skubal was a significant moment. He respected the season's demands, keeping his communications brief. He'd send the occasional text, showing support and letting Skubal know he was being thought of.
DeRosa's admiration for Skubal has grown over time. He appreciates how Skubal embraces the role of an entertainer, soaking in the moment like few other players can. His competitive spirit brings a unique, almost playful style to the game, which DeRosa truly appreciates.
During Spring Training, Skubal focuses on honing specific pitches and sequences, preparing his arm for the season. However, the intensity of the World Baseball Classic will be unlike anything he's experienced in Lakeland, Florida. He'll need to prepare both physically and mentally. This adds an extra layer of intrigue, especially since it's shaping up to be a contract year for him.
Fortunately, the WBC has a flexible schedule for pitchers. Starters don't have to stay with the team for the entire tournament and can integrate their outings into their Spring Training plan. Team USA's pool play begins on March 6, two weeks into the Tigers' Grapefruit League schedule.
Former Tigers manager Jim Leyland, who led Team USA to the WBC title in 2017, knows the importance of managing pitching. He emphasizes the pride taken in handling the team's pitching staff.
And this is the part most people miss: Although the travel will be greater for Skubal, with Team USA's pool playing in Houston, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch is detail-oriented in constructing pitching schedules. Hinch himself played for Team USA in the 1996 Olympics, which suggests the WBC stint shouldn't significantly impact Skubal's season. Instead, it offers a chance to create lifelong memories.
