The recent Hollywood Diversity Report has unveiled a concerning trend in the streaming film industry, highlighting a significant decline in representation for women and people of color. This downward trajectory is particularly alarming given the context of a shrinking number of streaming films, which has directly impacted employment opportunities for minorities across various roles, from directors and writers to lead actors and the overall cast.
One of the key findings is the drop in lead actors of color, from a high of 51% in 2024 to a mere 36% in 2025, marking the first time in three years that their representation fell below the proportionate representation of the U.S. population. Similarly, the share of streaming films directed by women has continued to decline, reaching an all-time low of 23.6% in this annual report's tracking period, which began in 2022.
Darnell Hunt, executive vice provost and vice chancellor at UCLA and co-founder of the report, attributes this reversal to the industry's flux and the current political climate. He believes that as budgets tighten, opportunities for filmmakers from underrepresented backgrounds are the first to be sacrificed. This sentiment is echoed by the study's authors, who blame backlash against DEI initiatives, industry contraction, and cost-cutting measures for the lack of diversity.
The decline in diversity is not limited to lead roles and directors; the representation of people of color in streaming films' casts has also decreased, dropping from 41% to just 25.8%. Michael Tran, a sociologist and co-author of the study, notes that streaming was once a haven for people of color and women to establish themselves in the industry, but these trends suggest a worrying shift.
However, there is a silver lining in the form of KPop Demon Hunters, a Netflix original film that has defied these trends. This film, which heavily incorporates Korean culture, has attracted a diverse audience, with a higher percentage of Latina households watching it compared to Asian households. Nico Garcia, a doctoral candidate at UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television and co-writer of the report, believes that this film demonstrates how diverse representation can bring audiences together rather than alienate them.
In my opinion, the Hollywood Diversity Report serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of progress in the entertainment industry. While it is disheartening to see these declines, especially in an industry that has the power to shape cultural narratives, it is essential to recognize and celebrate the successes like KPop Demon Hunters. This film showcases the potential for diverse storytelling to resonate with a wide range of audiences, and it is my hope that such examples will inspire a renewed commitment to diversity and inclusion in Hollywood.
