Forget population booms; it's all about tradition! That's the resounding message from Fergal Hartley, as Ballygunner gears up for their All-Ireland semi-final clash against St. Martin's. Hartley, a selector for the team and former Waterford captain, passionately argues that Ballygunner's phenomenal success isn't just about numbers, but about something far deeper: their unwavering commitment to family and heritage.
Hartley highlights the enduring legacy woven into the very fabric of the club, with generations of families contributing to their triumphs. His son, Mark, is the latest in a long line of players to emerge from the 'Gunners' production line, following in the footsteps of his father. His nephew, Colm, is another promising talent.
He reminisces about the 2001 Munster title, where he played alongside Micheál Mahony, whose sons, Philip, Pauric, Mikey, and Kevin, all became key players. The Mahonys and Foleys are nephews of former manager Darragh O’Sullivan and long-serving stalwart Shane.
"People often talk about population growth when discussing Ballygunner," Hartley explains. "But it's not just about numbers." He points out that in a previous All-Ireland semi-final, a staggering 10 players on the pitch had grandfathers who had played for Ballygunner. This highlights the deep-rooted family connections that define the club.
He further emphasizes that the club's youth system has remained consistent for over 20 years, suggesting that the team's success is about more than just an influx of new players. "A huge number of the players involved have fathers, uncles, grandparents who have played for the club. It's not just a case of people coming from all over the country," he adds.
This rich history isn't just a nostalgic memory for the 12-time Waterford champions; it's a living, breathing part of their identity.
"We came from fairly humble beginnings," Hartley reveals, reminding everyone that the club is 70 years old and didn't even have a pitch for 35 of those years. This perspective underscores the team's appreciation for their journey and the hard work that has brought them to where they are today.
Adding to the family narrative, Hartley's son, Mark, made his senior hurling debut during their Munster campaign, stepping in for Pauric Mahony. Mark has been a key player ever since.
For Hartley, this family involvement makes Ballygunner's record-breaking sixth provincial title even more special. "It's very special for every parent who sees their own child take to the field," he says. He emphasizes that while the players on the field receive the glory, a vast team works behind the scenes to make the club a well-oiled machine.
Looking back to 2001, Hartley couldn't have predicted the heights the club would reach. But even then, he recognized the exceptional talent emerging.
"We always knew with those lads – SOK (Stephen O’Keeffe), Pauric, Philip, Barry Coughlan, Brian O'Sullivan – that it was a special group coming through," Hartley recalls. "Could anyone have foreseen what they've gone on to do? You couldn't predict that."
Ballygunner's success has translated into one All-Ireland title in 2022, and they're hungry for more. Standing in their way is Wexford and Leinster champions St. Martin’s.
"History tells us that it gets tougher from here," Hartley notes, reflecting on their Munster final victory. "We've only gotten to one All-Ireland final. We've been stung here before, so it's up to us to have our house in order as best as we possibly can and prepare as best as we possibly can."
The three-week break since their Semple Stadium success should benefit Ballygunner as they prepare for their return to Thurles on Sunday.
"If you were to pick an ideal time, it's probably three weeks," Hartley says. "It gives you time to celebrate and recover and get back on the horse to go again, so it's probably perfect from that perspective."
