In a bold move, Phoebe Litchfield is diversifying her skills, guided by former Australian captain and wicketkeeper Tim Paine. To ensure Australia is prepared for any last-minute injuries, Litchfield is revisiting her wicketkeeping roots. On Tuesday, alongside Mooney and Paine, she spent an extensive session honing her glovework at Canberra's Manuka Oval. Litchfield shared her perspective: "It's about having multiple skills. I've always kept at home with the men's team, and I want to keep that skill sharp. But I'm not here to take anyone's spot."
Australia's decision not to select a full-time backup wicketkeeper for the multi-format series against India adds an element of strategy. Litchfield clarified her role, stating, "I could step in for a game, but if it's longer, we'd bring in a specialist. I'm learning, but I'm confident in my ability to fill in temporarily."
And this is the part most people miss: Litchfield's versatility could impact Australia's T20 World Cup squad. If she can provide short-term cover for Mooney, it opens up a spot for a player with a different skill set. Litchfield explained, "Learning new skills keeps you sharp. In cricket, you can't rest on your laurels. I love adding to my repertoire. Having backup wicketkeeping skills can benefit my career and Australia's team selection."
Litchfield's recent red-hot batting form in India's Women's Premier League was cut short by a quad injury. Now, she's working hard to catch up in her preparations for the India series. "It took time to recover, but I'm fully fit now and confident. I just need some net practice. Getting back on the field recently felt great, even though it was a bit strange after some time off."
