Arctic Blast: A Chilly Workweek Ahead
Get ready for a chilly workweek, folks! While Monday brings a burst of moderate to heavy snow and frigid temperatures, a brief respite arrives on Tuesday. But don't break out the summer gear just yet—a widespread accumulating snowstorm is on its way Wednesday, followed by an even colder Arctic blast for the weekend. Let's dive into the details and prepare for the upcoming weather rollercoaster.
Monday's Cold Front: A Snowy Start
The Sault Ste. Marie region is currently battling a strong cold front that's bringing a wintry mix of colder temperatures and lake-effect snow. Monday's main event is a burst of moderate to heavy snow between 10 am and 1 pm, with snowfall rates potentially reaching 1-2 cm per hour. This will create significant blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to near-zero. Lake-effect snow bands will develop over Lake Superior, dumping 5-10 cm across most areas, with some snowbelt locations seeing localized amounts of 10-20 cm.
Temperatures will struggle to reach -11°C during the day, before plummeting to a bone-chilling -22°C tonight under partly cloudy to cloudy skies. Strong winds, combined with these frigid temperatures, will produce wind chills in the -25°C to -30°C range, making outdoor activities potentially dangerous.
Tuesday's Quiet Breather
Tuesday brings a welcome break from the active weather as high pressure builds in from the Plains. Skies will remain mostly cloudy with some breaks developing, and northwest winds will gradually diminish to 10-15 km/h. Despite the quieter conditions, it will remain quite cold with a high of only -13°C and an overnight low on Tuesday night dropping to -17°C.
Wednesday's Snowstorm Returns
Wednesday will see a return to widespread flurries as a weak system tracks across the Great Lakes from the west. Light snow is expected to develop during the early morning hours and continue through much of the day. Behind this system, lake-effect snow will redevelop Wednesday night into Thursday. Temperatures will be slightly less harsh, reaching -8°C on Wednesday afternoon, making it the 'warmest' day of the extended period.
Thursday's Drop in Temperature
The temperature starts to drop on Thursday under a mix of sun and cloud. Daytime highs will be stuck in the minus teens with overnight lows well into the minus twenties.
Arctic Blast for the Weekend
Looking further ahead, there's increasing confidence in a very cold Arctic airmass settling in Friday through the weekend. A strong high-pressure system could potentially deliver afternoon highs struggling to reach -15°C or colder by Saturday. So, get ready for another round of frigid temperatures and potentially heavy snowfall as we head into the weekend.
